WHAT IS BEHAVIOR CONSULTATION? Because you know your pet so well, you know when something is wrong. When this is a medical problem, the solution is obvious; call your veterinarian. But sometimes what’s wrong with our pets isn’t so easily identifiable: odd behavior, sudden temperament shifts, aggression, changes in obedience or toileting habits, nuisance behavior like barking, etc. Quite simply, a behavioral veterinarian works with you and your pet, in conjunction with your regular veterinarian, to identify the reason for your pet’s problem behavior and create a treatment plan to address it. HOW BEHAVIOR CONSULTATION WORKS When you’ve identified a problem or have a concern about your pet, simply give your regular veterinarian a call as you normally would. If your veterinarian determines that the problem may have a behavioral component, he or she will fax a referral form and your pet’s medical records to Dr. Pachel, and he’ll get in touch with you to schedule an appointment at your convenience. At that appointment (usually about 2 hours in length) the doctor will observe your pet in its home surroundings and, with you, discuss the history of your pet’s problem, prognosis, and offer treatment recommendations. After the session, he offers continued support via email and will follow-up with your regular veterinarian should that be necessary. WHY BEHAVIOR CONSULTATION WORKS The bond that exists between owners and their pets is a strong one and, like any relationship, takes time to understand. Because Dr. Pachel spends time with you and your pet in your pet’s home environment, he is able to observe how your pet behaves on a day-to-day basis and how your pet interacts with its family and its surroundings, and he is able to make individualized recommendations for each patient. Whether that recommendation is for changes to your pet’s schedule, diet, training or behavioral medications, you can rest easy knowing that your pet’s problems have been understood and addressed.
